I can remember the excitement when I got my first laptop. This meant I could carry around my electronic files on a computer the same way I lug my personal items in my knapsack. Since then I have seen many people doing the same. Their shoulders sagging from the weight of laptops, they would pull out and check their e-mail, or play a game while riding the subway. But before you run out and buy a laptop you should at least consider whether the data you store on it is safe.

While laptops are as powerful as some desktops, they are not as safe or sturdy. If you accidentally drop a desktop, it might survive the shock. When stolen, there is a great chance that you will never get it back. Therefore, not only are you losing your laptop but you are also losing every single thing you had stored on it, if you did not create a backup.

However, like desktop computers, you can use the same safe backup procedures to secure your important data. You can use online backup services, remote backup services, as well as backing up your data onto an external drive. The costs of these services or using an external drive will more than pay for themselves if you lose your laptop, or it suffers permanent damage.

A spiritual Master once said he could carry the universe in the palm of his hand. So too, do we keep our personal details on computers and other small gadgets like ipods, mp3 players, and so on. Unlike the universe, a mistake, a drive crashing, or a malicious event can make the data on our computers disappear into thin air. So we need to backup on suitable media.

There are many different ways to perform a data backup. However, one of the quickest and easiest methods of doing this is with a CD Rom. As with any other method of backup, a CD Rom does have its negatives; however, usually the positives far outweigh the negatives. For example, you get more storage than with the standard floppy disks.

The basic CD disk is the CD-R, which means CD-Rewritable. You can only use it once to copy your records. This disk is good for permanent storage, that is, you don’t need to update the files on the disk. However, if you need to erase or revise any of the files this is not a good choice for you. However, it can hold a maximum of 700 MB of data, including various files such as your application programs, software utilities, word processing documents, pictures, and music. CD-R disks are relatively inexpensive and you can buy them from your local computer store.

You do not copy your records onto a CD-R disk in the usual sense, as with floppy disks. That is, copy refers to the process of burning the file onto the disk. Therefore, you will need to buy a CD-Burner. A CD-Burner is a special piece of equipment similar to a drive, and it comes with software to perform the copy, erase, and delete functions you would normally use when using floppy disks.

A friend was going on about how his new hard drive crashed two days after he bought it. Without thinking I suggested he return it for a refund because his warranty should cover the failure. He then explained to me that he had just transferred the data stored on the old hard drive to the new one. I continued to reassure him that he didn’t have a serious problem because he could still do another transfer from the old drive to a new one.

But I realized I was not helping him over his emotional preoccupation with the drive crashing, so I shut up. The silence was deafening, nonetheless, because I couldn’t stop processing my thoughts on how he could solve his problem.

We were into two long minutes of silence when he blurted out he had mistakenly thrown out the old drive. So having identified the problem I set out to reassure him that he had a good chance of recovering the data.

However, we still had to go through a few more deliberations before deciding how he could approach the problem.

Usually, it is possible to recovery data stored on a hard drive, but it depends on the circumstances. If you find that, your hard drive is making scratching or ticking noises, software might be all you need to recover your data. However, if the hard drive aperture arm fails or you have damaged platters, do-it-yourself software would not normally do the job. In fact, going this route could further damage the drive, and make recovery more difficult. You need to consult with a data recovery technician in this case to ensure a proper outcome.

The capacity or size of the drive doesn’t matter either. You can use data recovery techniques to get your data back. Again, sometimes software works and at other times it doesn’t. You will need to check for noises coming from the drive before deciding if you can use software. However, if the drive crashes you want to send it to a data recovery shop before it is too late.

With each passing day I find myself putting one or more pieces of information about myself on my computer. I am sure you too have this experience. This means there is no time difference between recording the transaction and backing up the file. Indeed, this is a reliable and sure method for backing up data.

Windows XP uses continuous backup with the system restore feature included in the program. Other technologies also include some form of continuous backup. However, they represent a mishmash of standards that do not provide compatibility across the different technologies.

This makes it difficult for users who use more than one technology. The key to this technology, though, is the you can restore the backup using any specific time as a base. For example, you can restore the backup for the last date before your system crashed.

Some adult people claim they have perfect teeth even though they never had a dental checkup. Try selling theses guys on the benefits of seeing a dentist twice a year. But if you could at least convince them to visit a dentist once, just to prove their point, X-rays may reveal several cavities hiding inside their teeth. Similarly, your computer could have viruses, worms, trojans, and other malware lurking undetected inside your computer just waiting for the right moment to pounce.

So, how do you protect yourself and your data against viruses and worms? First, install anti-virus software on your computer. This software will scan the contents of your computer’s memory and check for all known viruses. If it comes across some malicious software, it will contain it. Similar programs scan files you download form various sources, lowering the chances of infection.

Most anti-virus software come with automatic updates. Make sure you set the software to visit the author’s site at least once a day to get updates. The bad guys are continually writing new programs, which means your current protection is only good until the next virus appears. Good anti-virus programs keep their database of viruses current to keep up with new malware. So to avoid infection you must to do the same.

You can also protect against malware by following a few simple guidelines. First, avoid downloading content from unfamiliar websites. Many people offer free stuff that might contain malware. If you need a specific download, go to one of the trusted free download sites like download.com. Only open e-mails, and especially, e-mails attachments from trusted sources. Don’t let curiosity get the better of you.

Remember curiosity killed the cat; it can also kill your computer and cause someone to steal your personal information.

You often hear that you should back up your data, and the risks you take if you neglect to do so. Even companies that sell data recovery services caution us to backup or perish. It sounds like those earlier times when people who didn’t give a portion of their wages to the clergy had their future cast in hell. But those days are over and you can safely decide what data you want to backup and what you could care less about. However, I think backing up everything on your hard drive is a waste of time and space.

But how do you decide what to back up? That is your decision, however, let me offer a suggestion. Backup any data that you will need to prove a point, confirm ownership of assets, outline your legal rights and duties, and the promises from the political party you voted for in the last election.

In other words, it depends on what’s important to you, and could include photos, work projects, schoolwork, your address book, any personal documents, music collection and e-mail archives and some software applications.

You have a couple of ways to back up your computer. The most cost-effective for the home computer is to buy a CD burner and some blank disks and just burn (copy) the files onto the blank disks. If you run a business, you could buy storage space on a server that is off-site and update the entire computer network every so often. This adds more security to your customer lists, accounts receivable and other important data.

If the system fails or your drive crashes, you will have a copy of your records to fall back on. Also, taking the time every week to back up your new data will save you both time and money.

Buying data recovery software does not always guarantee you will have success with recovering your data, nor does it mean you will have the chance to use it.

Remember software is a tool, and as with any other tool you can only use it if the conditions are right. You will have proof of this when you can’t access your computer’s operating system.

The operating system is the main bridge leading to all other functions in your computer. If this bridge closed or you don’t have access to it, everything else shuts down, but you can try a go-around.

The problem arises if your boot drive crashes. So you can try booting your computer by using the CD-ROM that came with your computer. It contains a copy of the operating system you will need to boot up your computer, and allow you to use the data recovery software.

Of course, if you can’t find the CD-ROM or it doesn’t work, you can try two alternatives to get your system firing on all cylinders. First, you can buy a new hard drive and install it on your computer. Or, you can move the hard drive from your computer to one that works properly. Like anything else, both alternatives have advantages and disadvantages, so do your homework before you decide which direction to take.

Now you can begin to use the data recovery software to see if you can recover your lost data. But you should know about a neat feature that comes with most data recovery programs. It is the undo feature that works similar to the back button on your browser. But it serves to restore your system to the previous stage before you tried the recovery. Make sure your software has this feature, it’s a good hedge in case you mess up.

So you got to use your computer safely and look out for suspicious use if you share your computer with others.
