Losing Precious Memories Sucks
A lightning storm passed through my area a few years ago. Its force zapped my computer and I could not access my hard drives. I lugged the computer to a computer shop just down the street from my house where I had to pay $35 for thirty minutes of the technician’s time. The techie opened the case and ran a few tests, and closed back the case. He couldn’t help me further.
The next day I called in a high price technician who spent a couple of hours testing but just couldn’t solve the problem. However, he offered hope by taking the computer to his store to see if his high tech tools could help.
He returned a day later wearing an uneasy grin and suggested I send the drives to a shop somewhere in California. He assured me if they couldn’t get the job done, then no one else could. He explained something about the age and model of the drives and the impact the current technology had on them. Mind you, I had recently bought one of the drives. Perhaps he meant that although I recently bought the drive it was a model that preceded the new technology. Hmmm. It is true I did buy it at a discount, but exactly what difference does a few months make?
This hurts because these drives contain some of my more intimate thoughts and dreams, my poetry, my short stories and more. It wasn’t too long ago I transferred a bunch of paper files to the computer that blew up. I have been creating these personal mementos since my teenage years. Difficult years I may add. I used poetry to understand what was happening inside me, what were my motivations, my frustrations, my likes, dislikes and so on.
So I am telling this story because this shouldn’t happen to you. If you follow the events of this site you will go a long way in preserving your family and business treasures.
