Most people buy one domain and put up one website using that domain to start their online journey. Others, like me, buy several to build a virtual empire of websites dedicated to one or more niches. Managing one domain at your web host is simple if you can understand basic terminology. But most people will need to work through if they want to add several domains to their portfolio.
